Character: Reverend Paul Elijah “Birdie” Byrd
Birdie was born on an Appalachian backroad to Reverend John Peter Byrd and his eighth wife. His family traveled the country in a motorcade of trailers known as “Fruits of Faith Mobile Ministries.” Birdie’s father raised him to be a master manipulator and con man. When Birdie tried to leave the ministry, he was subjected to a painful “exorcism” ritual. Afterward, a fire spread that killed 43 of his relatives. As soon as Birdie became a target of the arson investigation, he began to act as if he believed himself to be possessed. Deemed unfit to participate in his own defense, he was committed to Grover Secure Psychiatric Institute.
